WHY WE EXIST

Young adults age out of foster care at 18 years old.

In Texas, extended foster care (to age 21) is available, but the young adult must “opt-in” for extended foster care, and that is where many begin to fall through the cracks. Multiple foster placements, the physical and emotional conditions in certain placements, and the label of being “a foster kid” has been the cause of trauma for many young adults who have been in care.

1 in 4 will be homeless within 4 years of aging out of foster care. Less than 3% will graduate from college. Housing insecurity, incarceration, substance abuse, lack of stable employment, unplanned pregnancy are among the outcomes for up to 70% of young adults who age out. As for the other 30%? The research shows that at least one caring adult outside the system was the difference. Adults in Training will provide that difference.

PARTNER HIGHLIGHTS

Partnering With Us to Serve Houston's Children & Youth

Who better to partner with than DePelchin? So widely recognized for its great work with foster parents and adoption. And how wonderful to begin with the young adults who are aging out of foster care.

The DePelchin supervised independent living facility houses 20 young adults on DePelchin’s campus.

We are so grateful to engage with DePelchin and recognize that although our Adults in Training must leave DePelchin at 21, we can work together to ensure they are well prepared for a stable transition. And so, our Adults in Training initiative officially launched in January of 2023. We’re so blessed to have DePelchin to serve alongside us!

Adults in Training is excited to partner with The Menninger Clinic, combining our efforts to support and uplift the mental health and well-being of our participants.

The Menninger Clinic has nearly 100 years of experience diagnosing and treating adults and adolescents with mental illness. Highly trained teams of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, counselors, and more provide a supportive, healing presence, along with programs that strengthen skills for making positive life changes.

Supporting our 18-week getting ahead life skills course

This past fall, we launched our ‘Getting Ahead’ class with Main Street Ministries, to equip our Adults in Training with skills that promote their emotional, social, physical, spiritual, financial, and cognitive development. We are so grateful for their partnership support!

This 18-week life skills course is taking place every Sunday at the DePelchin dorm. Every time our Adults in Training attend class on time, they get a $30 HEB grocery voucher and also enjoy a free meal after class!

How amazing is this opportunity!? Thank you, Main Street Ministries, for empowering our Adults in Training with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed at adulthood.

Providing Gardening Education To Our Adults In Training Members

We are proud to partner with Garden Girls to provide enriching gardening workshops for youth through our Adults in Training program.

This collaboration offers hands-on learning experiences that teach valuable life skills, promote environmental stewardship, and foster a sense of accomplishment. Together, we are cultivating a brighter future for our community's youth.
